Secrets of the Past: The True Meaning of Sicily’s "Val"

The prefix "Val" in these historical regions does not come from the Italian word for valley (valle).

If you happen to look at an old historical map of Sicily, you will notice the island divided into three large historic regions: Val di Mazara, Val di Noto, and Val Demone. At first glance, anyone reading these names today naturally assumes they represent three giant geographical valleys. It is a very common misconception. Because the Italian word for valley is valle, most people—including many Italians—assume these districts were created based on the physical landscape, carved out by rivers and mountain ranges.

However, the history behind these names is entirely different.

The prefix "Val" in these historical regions does not come from the Italian word for valley (valle). Instead, it stems from the period of Arab rule in Sicily, originating from the Arabic term walāya (meaning a province, district, or administrative territory governed by a magistrate).  So, the next time you explore old maps or travel across the ancient territories of Sicily, remember that a "Val" is not just a valley carved by nature—it is a living echo of the island's rich, layered medieval history.
