It was a striking reminder that new saints appear according to the shape of the new world.

Every tour is a two-way street of discovery. We grow so accustomed to the idea that saints belong to distant, ancient centuries—figures framed in gold leaf, residing entirely in the realm of history books and old legends. You simply do not expect to step into a historic church and suddenly realize you are looking at the portrait of someone younger than you.

During a recent walking tour of the famous wedding church in Savoca—where Francis Ford Coppola filmed the iconic cinematic marriage in The Godfather—a sharp-eyed tourist drew my attention to just that. Amidst the centuries-old stone walls hung an unexpected framed photograph: a smiling young man in modern casual clothes, jeans, and trainers.

It was a striking reminder that new saints appear according to the shape of the new world.

The portrait depicted Saint Carlo Acutis, often called the "influencer of God." Born in 1991 and passing away in 2006 at just 15 years old, Carlo lived like any regular teenager of the modern era—he loved video games, hung out with friends, and possessed a natural genius for computer programming.

Yet, he sanctified his everyday digital life, using his coding skills to catalog Eucharistic miracles online. His iconographic attributes—an ostensorio, a rosary, and a computer—perfectly capture a sacred legacy bridging timeless devotion with the internet age.

Finding a modern cyber-apostle inside a remote Sicilian movie set is a wonderful reminder that learning never stops, and holiness can emerge from the very fabric of our contemporary world, wearing sneakers just like the generations of today.
